Landscape artist Le Notre created the gardens of the Versailles Palace, combining lakes, decorative canals, flower beds and myriads of different kinds of trees. Louis XV took gondola rides along the 1.5 km (1 mi) long Grand Canal, and at one point more than 1,400 statues decorated its water features and avenues. A severe windstorm in 1999 felled 10,000 trees and damaged the palace, and restoration projects continue. Address: Place d'Armes Versailles Ile-de-France France
